Maria Friberg: Inherited Words - - Exhibitions - CONNERSMITH.

Maria Friberg, 2022.

CONNERSMITH presents an exclusive look at Maria Friberg’s new work, “Inherited Words.” Created during her stay at Bergmangården, Ingmar Bergman’s estate, this photograph features a vintage book caught in the surf of a seascape. Friberg’s captivating imagery symbolizes tradition and the tension between freedom and confinement.

Friberg employs domestic objects to investigate concepts of masculinity, focusing on how inherited responsibilities influence identity across time. Drawing from classical painting, Friberg works directly with scenes, light, and objects, without digital manipulation - no Photoshop, no Artifical Intelligence.

Critically examining the societal impact of masculine norms, her work reinforces our long-term relationship with nature and prompts reflection on the continuity of values and traditions handed down through generations.

Maria Friberg’s art is held in Collections such as the National Museum of Women and the Arts (DC), Fotomuseum Winterthur, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Denver Art Museum, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Stockholm’s Moderna Museet as well as numerous Scandanavian and European private/public collections.
