Whippersnappers

Conner Contemporary Art is damned pleased to introduce the work of Fatima Hoang, Michael Magnan , Maki Maruyama, Annie Schap, Zach Storm and Matthew Sutton in Whippersnappers – an exhibition of young, bright, culturally astute artists who, in our opinion, rock.
• Sculptor, video artist and reigning U.S. air guitar champion Fatima Hoang has combined his passions to create a spectacle for the current generation by channeling Gilbert and George’s Singing Sculpture. Hoang recently triumphed in a solo exhibition at Artists Space, New York City.
• Michael Magnan, contributor and assistant editor of K48 Magazine, marries the synthetic with the natural to create futuristic yet rustic collages that seduce the eye. Magnan exhibits with John Connelly Presents, NYC.
• Maki Maruyama constructs environments for the occupation of his imaginative cast of children that are simultaneously spooky and serene. Maruyama was recently featured in Little Creatures at Transformer Gallery, Washington, D.C.
• Video artist Annie Schap recently moved from Baltimore to Brooklyn and became agoraphobic. Not surprisingly, the challenge has affected her in a good way. Schap exhibits with Conner Contemporary and recently was featured in Cinemascope, London.
• Zach Storm, who earnestly strives to be your cultural savior, delineates disingenuousness marketing in his fascinatingly idiosyncratic drawings of invented novel covers. Storm shows with Conner Contemporary and group exhibitions in Berlin and Paris are expected in 2006.
• Matthew Sutton is quite possibly D.C.’s best kept art secret. While working by day and pursuing mathematical theory by night, Sutton has quietly created a playbook of conceptually tight ideas that continue to amaze. For this show the artist has recapitulated the vast contents of a CVS store from memory. The team of Sutton and Gabriel Martinez were recently finalists for the annual Trawick prize.
There will be an opening night reception at Conner Contemporary Art on Friday, February 3rd from 6-8pm.
