Press Release

CONNERSMITH.  at Expo Chicago
booth 237

CONNERSMITH. is pleased to present an art historical exhibition of exceptional works (1957 – 1977) by Washington, DC abstract painters Alma Thomas, Sam Gilliam and Howard Mehring. The show features paintings by Alma Thomas and Howard Mehring, curated from The Collection of Vincent Melzac, which recently have been released from the collector’s private residence and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Headquarters. CONNERSMITH. has represented the Melzac Collection since 2002. The Gallery will also exhibit a remarkable drape painting by Sam Gilliam from a private collection in Washington, D.C.

We are expressly honored to exhibit Alma Thomas's “Untitled (for Vincent)” (1976). A special gift from Alma Thomas to Vincent Melzac, the painting was displayed prominently for decades in the collector’s residence. In 1998, “Untitled (for Vincent)” was selected for the artist’s traveling retrospective and was exhibited at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art; Tampa Museum of Art; New Jersey State Museum; Anacostia Museum Smithsonian Institution and The Columbus Museum. This work received curatorial attention as embodying an evolution of Thomas’s style, when, in 1976, she began to paint more loosely, developing an exciting new form of imagery.

The gallery is delighted that Susan MacWilliam will exhibit "Faint" at Expo Video, curated by Daria de Beauvais.
